Potter's
Archival Music is owned an operated by Bill and
Mary Ellen Potter. A brief musical background
for both of them follows as well as a history
of their previously owned music store.
Bill:
Native of Jacksonville, Fl. Professional
clarinetist and pianist as well as a Life member
of the American Federation of Musicians Local
444 having joined in 1934. Founding member
Jacksonville
Symphony Orchestra as principal
clarinetist.
Mary
Ellen: Originally from Ohio. Professional
flutist and pianist and a former member of the
Jacksonville Symphony Orchestra. Bachelor's
degrees in flute, piano and music education from
College-Conservatory of University of Cincinnati
and a Master's degree in musicology. Multi-level
teaching experience. Presently professor
of flute, piano and music theory at the Florida
Community College, Jacksonville.
Store History:
- Inception as Southern Music Company at 23
E. Bay St. in 1911.
- Moved to 28 West Adams St. continuing until
leasing space in the newly constructed Cohen
Brothers Department Store in 1921.
- Operated as privately-owned department until
1950 at which time a building at 216 West Beaver
St. was acquired and the business was moved
to that location.
- Specializing in public music, the business
continued until its closing in 1989.
- Publications inventory has been retained.
